Program | Special Programs - MATCH |
Our first and second grade classes meet once each week. Using the Jewish holidays as our guide, they explore Israel, mitzvot, Hebrew letters and Jewish identity through art, music and stories. They participate in school wide holiday celebrations and one family service during the year.
Our third, fourth, and seventh grade students attend Religious School once a week, while our fifth and sixth graders attend twice a week. We offer a departmentalized program made up of two periods, a period of Hebrew/prayer study and a period of Judaic study. Tefillah (prayer assembly conducted by either our Rabbi or Cantor) music, art programs and holiday celebrations are integral components of our curriculum. Once a year each grade participates in one Friday evening Shabbat Experience which includes a traditional Shabbat dinner followed by an informal Shabbat service. | MATCH (Mishpacha at Temple Chaverim) is a series of family workshops. Throughout the year, parents and students come together for joint learning and participatory activities. Each workshop provides our students and families an opportunity to discover something new about our Jewish heritage in an engaging and creative way. A Cantors concert, a trip to the Holocaust Resource Center, an exploration of a Jewish wedding ceremony and an investigation of our ancestors helps to enhance our understanding of the curriculum. |
The High School Leadership Program | Youth Choir |
Join us for Erev Shavuot Festival services and Community Hebrew High School Confirmation, taking place at Temple Chaverim this year, on Sunday, June 8th at 7:30pm!
Our High School program is a community run school which provides an opportunity for teens to continue their Jewish education in an informal environment of debate and discussion. We have joined forces with Temple Beth-El in Huntington, Temple Beth David in Commack and Temple Beth Torah in Melville to offer a unique community High School program. By combining our resources we are able to offer many interesting and meaningful courses, develop a special leadership approach to Jewish education, and include a social atmosphere for our students. Bus transportation to each of the participating temples is offered every Monday night, along with a pizza dinner. | The Youth Choir, under the direction of Cantor Hyman, is open to students in second through sixth grade (older students are welcome!) and participates in Shabbat Family Services and special programs both at the Temple and in the community throughout the year. The youth choir schedule is distributed through the Religious School office. |
Holiday Happenings | Confirmation |
| Holiday Happenings are creative workshops for children ages 4, 5 & 6 and their parents. They are offered several times a year and introduce our youngest students to the Jewish holidays through puppets and projects, stories and songs and cooking and fun | Sophomores have the opportunity to meet and study with the senior rabbis of each Temple: Rabbi Hecht (Temple Chaverim), Rabbi Gellman (Temple Beth Torah), Rabbi Clopper (Temple Beth El), and Rabbi Needleman (Temple Beth David). The class will discuss and debate topics ranging from abortion and euthanasia to atheism and intermarriage culminating in a confirmation ceremony. |
Bnei Mitzvah | High School Special Events |
Bar/Bat Mitzvah, which symbolizes the taking of Jewish responsibilities, is an important milestone in a Jewish persons life. At Temple Chaverim the process of preparing for Bar/Bat Mitzvah begins with learning the basics of Judaism and continues with a specifically designed Bnei Mitzvah program. This program was developed not only to enable our students to learn their Torah and Haftarah portions but also to perfect their prayer skills as well as to provide an opportunity to develop relationships with our congregation, rabbis and cantor. The cantor oversees the preparation of individual students Hebrew assignments, both the prayers and the chanting of the portions. The rabbis teach about the meaning of Bar/Bat Mitzvah, the structure of the worship service, and the meaning of the various portions, and assists each student in preparing his or her Devar Torah, or speech.
Each Bar/Bat Mitzvah student is required to attend Religious School, Blessings Class, Rabbis Class and Bar Mitzvah lessons with the rabbis, cantor, student-cantor or instructor. A parents handbook will be distributed at the Bnei Mitzvah orientation, and the rabbis and cantor teach a family workshop which introduces the meaning of Bar and Bat Mitzvah before the Rabbis Class begins.

| Conclave: In November the High School Leadership Program offers a High School Retreat, or conclave, at the Union for Reform Judaism Eisner Camp, in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. A conclave is a wonderful opportunity for High School students to participate in a unique Jewish experience away from home. The conclave is held at Eisner Camp where participants will celebrate Shabbat, learn about a variety of Jewish topics, play sports, take hikes, and, of course, get to know each other better. |
The Religious School of Temple Chaverim serves families with children from kindergarten through twelfth grade.
